My parents are in an inaicrtreal marriage (white and Mexican) and since I tend to identify with my Mexican half (I look Mexican and all my family and friends where I grew up were Mexican) my marriage is also an inaicrtreal marriage (white and Mexican). I think inaicrtreal marriages produce the best looking children : )Rather than the process of entering an inaicrtreal marriage, I think it’s more interesting seeing the differences that come when different cultures/races come together in marriage and the process of looking through someone else’s eyes that you might not be able to do without being married. There’s also a real honesty that can take place in matter of race since there is no worry about being judged for thinking certain things or asking certain questions since you’re married to the person. Definitely some racial jokes based on stereotypes being thrown around because you feel comfortable joking that way with each other (unless you’re uptight). There’s been times when one blames the way the other thinks on their race. Of course it’s all in fun but still it happens. : )It’s hard to tell which differences are actual race/cultural related, and which are more socioeconomic. Sometimes I think difference we have in terms of how we see things are racial but then the more I look at it it seems it’s more our different socioeconomic upbringings.Also, I’ve discovered that my wife, being white, doesn’t think about race and discrimination nearly as much as I do (although she’s definitely seen it happen in the way we’ve gotten treated differently). For instance, when visiting churches I’m quick to notice that there are really no Mexicans and the church is almost all white (and definitely in the leadership of the church). It’s one of the first things I noticed. She didn’t notice it at all. I had to point it out. It bothered me (being we’re in a city with a very large minority population) but she wasn’t really bothered by it.Honestly I don’t consider us being of different races/cultures to really be a challenge at all. I think the bigger challenge is the different socioeconomic upbringings.
